The InterUSS Platform membership and contributor network consists of companies and governmental organisations active in the drone ecosystem working together to develop open-source tools that improve the interoperability of UTM/U-space systems.
Our Mission
The mission of the InterUSS Platform, an initiative by the Linux Foundation, is to enhance communication and collaboration within the drone industry through open-source implementations and industry partnerships. The platform focuses on developing interoperable solutions for UTM/U-space to ensure safe, efficient, scalable and coordinated drone operations. By enabling seamless communication and data exchange between different USS/USSP and supporting regulatory and industry compliance, the platform aims to improve overall airspace management and foster innovation in the drone sector.
Our Approach
At the heart of the InterUSS Platform is a commitment to transparency, collaboration, and innovation. We follow a principled development process rooted in the following pillars:
- Integrity and Trust: Aviation demands the highest standards of reliability and safety. Our platform upholds these principles by ensuring rigorous peer reviews, robust testing, and a culture of accountability.
- Open Source Excellence: As an initiative of the Linux Foundation, we champion the use of open-source tools to foster interoperability, accessibility, and innovation. Open source enables collaboration across industry stakeholders, reducing barriers to adoption and ensuring flexibility for diverse use cases.
- Checks and Balances: We implement a multi-layered approach to ensure quality and compliance. Through ongoing peer reviews, industry-standard testing, and close alignment with regulatory requirements, we maintain the reliability of our solutions.
- Aviation Expertise: InterUSS Platform is composed of aviation experts, regulatory professionals, and technology pioneers who come directly from our members or are part of the Advisory Council. This diverse expertise ensures that every tool and solution we develop is informed by the unique needs and challenges of the drone industry.
Our Impact
The InterUSS Platform is transforming how the drone industry collaborates and operates, delivering measurable benefits to stakeholders:
- Enhanced Safety: By facilitating seamless communication and data sharing among UTM systems, our solutions contribute to safer airspace operations and minimize the risk of conflicts and accidents.
- Scalability and Efficiency: Our interoperable tools empower regulators and service providers to manage increasingly complex drone operations without compromising efficiency. This capability is essential as drone usage grows exponentially.
- Cost Savings: By standardizing testing, onboarding, certification, and system updates, we reduce operational costs for USSPs and regulatory bodies, making drone services more accessible and sustainable.
- Innovation and Growth: Open-source collaboration fosters technological advancements and enables the industry to address emerging challenges effectively.
- Unified Global Standards: The platform’s commitment to interoperability lays the foundation for a more integrated and harmonized global airspace, supporting the safe and efficient use of drones worldwide.
Through these impacts, the InterUSS Platform is paving the way for a future where drones are seamlessly integrated into everyday life and advancing industries
Our vision
In the coming years, the InterUSS Platform aims to expand our support of the US UTM Implementation as it grows nationally in the US and standardize the use of automated testing across the EU for certified USSPs and Civil Aviation Authorities (CAAs). We also expect to continue to contribute to an open ecosystem in regions like Australia and beyond. Our goals include streamlining the onboarding of new USSPs into the U-space airspace system, facilitating certification processes, and enhancing oversight. Additionally, we seek to support USSPs through system changes and updates. By achieving these objectives, we aim to significantly improve safety, reduce operational costs, and ensure a more efficient and unified U-space system.
