The mission of the InterUSS Platform, an initiative by the Linux Foundation, is to enhance communication and collaboration within the drone industry through open-source implementations and industry partnerships. Contributions to shaping the project are open to individuals, companies and organizations.
Governing Bodies
The Governing Board
The Governing Board oversees the strategic direction and ensures the alignment of the Platform’s activities with its mission. It is responsible for guiding long-term goals, approving budgets, ensuring transparent governance and ensuring the InterUSS Platform stays true to its open-source nature. The board also plays a key role in endorsing technical priorities.
The Technical Steering Committee
The Technical Steering Committee is responsible for the technical oversight of the open source Project, including coordinating the technical direction of the Project, approving project or system proposals, organizing sub-projects, creating sub-committees or working groups and appointing representatives to work with other open source or open standards communities.
The Outreach Committee
The Outreach Committee is responsible for the design, development and execution of community outreach efforts on behalf of the Governing Board. The Outreach Committee coordinates with the Governing Board and technical communities to maximize the outreach and visibility of the Project throughout the industry.

The Linux Foundation
The Linux Foundation is a neutral, trusted hub for developers and organizations to code, manage, and scale open technology projects and ecosystems. The InterUSS Platform is a directed fund of the Linux Foundation. The Linux Foundation supports the InterUSS Platform through:
- Neutrality: A neutral host foundation for intellectual property (IP)
- Governance: Governance and community help
- Resources: Events, community, marketing, training, CI/build infrastructure
- Growth: Build momentum within the LF community
- Funds: Ability to raise and manage funds
- Experience: Colleagues who share deep open source experience
To be hosted by the Linux Foundation, projects must adopt an open source license for their code, be backed by an LF member, and ensure neutral ownership of core assets such as trademarks, domains, and code repositories. Governance must be clearly documented in a project charter, with a defined separation between business and technical leadership, allowing for community-driven technical decision-making. Participation in the technical community must be open to all, without requiring financial contribution. The LF supports various types of collaborative structures, including open source software, open hardware, open standards, open data and open governance.
InterUSS Platform’s source code is distributed under the Apache License, Version 2.0, a permissive open source license that allows for the use, modification, and distribution of code with minimal restrictions. This is a very popular license for open source projects at the Linux Foundation, the Apache Foundation, and elsewhere, as it provides IP protection while allowing for maximal practical use cases.
